Copper Weight

PCB Copper Weight

Copper weight (thickness) is measured in ounces per square foot (oz/ft²). It determines the current-carrying capacity and thermal performance of the copper traces.

Standard Options

  • 1 oz (35µm): Standard for most applications. Suitable for signal traces and low-to-moderate current.
  • 2 oz (70µm): Used for higher current applications, power supplies, and motor drivers.

Inner vs. Outer Layers

The copper weight setting applies to the outer layers (top and bottom). Inner layer copper weight is 0.5 oz by default for multilayer boards.

Design Considerations

Heavier copper increases minimum trace width and spacing requirements. Ensure your design rules account for the selected copper weight to avoid manufacturing issues.
